Harris Health is a nationally recognized health system comprising three teaching hospitals and an extensive network of ambulatory care centers serving the people of Harris County, Texas, since 1966. Staffed by the faculty, fellows and residents from two nationally ranked medical schools, Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), Harris Health is the first healthcare system in Houston to receive the prestigious National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) designation for its network of patient-centered medical homes.

Each year, Harris Health provides more than 1.8 million total outpatient visits through its more than 40 ambulatory care facilities. Additionally, Harris Health sees more than 177,000 emergency visits at its Level 1 and Level 3 trauma centers and 35,000 hospital admissions through its three hospitals: Ben Taub, LBJ and Quentin Mease.

Established by voter referendum to enhance the level of charity care available in the community, Harris Health System has often received national recognition for serving those in need and for its achievements in operational excellence, such as being named to the 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Most Wired Hospitals lists by the American Hospital Association’s Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.

Job Profile


The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides leadership in the delivery of community health care services and directs all activities of the Harris Health System to ensure the mission of delivering quality patient care to all residents of Harris County, Texas, regardless of their ability to pay, is accomplished. The President and CEO will provide strategic leadership, oversight, and direction for Harris Health. S/he will be expected to guide the organization to achieve strong operating results, excellent quality of care, and improvement of community health status in a fiscally responsible manner. The successful candidate will be a proven leader that has held progressive leadership positions within highly matrixed environments. S/he is required to possess experience in a healthcare environment where there is significant importance placed on collaboration with political officials, community leaders, academic medical school leaders, physicians, medical staff and employees to improve organizational processes, patient care services and outcomes.



Master's Degree in Health Care Administration, Public Health or related field is strongly preferred.


Ten (10) years of experience in hospital or health system administration; or a M.D. or D.O. licensed to practice medicine.

Broad understanding of health care issues, including the role of academic medicine with researchers, practitioners, and educators is required.

Experience, engagement or interaction with a public health entity is required.

Experience in developing community health care programs particularly, in highly challenged urban areas and working with marginalized communities.

Solid track record of developing and cultivating strong, effective collaborations and partnerships among diverse constituencies.

Experience in effectively representing hospital needs with an understanding of the broader economic and political demands that must be considered to ensure organizational success.

Experience in effectively sustaining an organization through a variety of complex funding mechanisms.

Adept at navigating growth and change, and negotiating solutions in the best interest of patients served.


Ten (10) years of hospital or health system management and administrative experience.

Seasoned and successful leader with experience operating effectively in a complex health system, or academic medical center or other complex health-related industry or organization.

Experience collaborating, strengthening, and working effectively with members of a Board.


A medical doctor must be a Board certified physician, licensed to practice.
