Overall Job Objective

Position Description

This position will perform duties as outlined below in Mosquito and Vector Control and/or other HCPH Divisions as required. Primary supervision for this position will be the responsibility of the Mosquito and Vector Control Division, however, during months when mosquito-borne diseases are absent this position may be reassigned to supervisory personnel from other divisions. 
 
Mosquito Control Operator Duties (during season) ULV Applications

  • Accurately enters data in Ultra Low Volume (ULV) monitoring systems.
  • Applies insecticides by driving truck-mounted ULV spray equipment through assigned areas at night.
  • Performs appropriate control measures to mosquito populations in assigned areas as required.
  • Monitors environmental and mechanical conditions during insecticidal applications to ensure accurate delivery of material.
  • Uses pesticides in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines.
  • Records all insecticide usage. Thermal Fog Applications
  • Performs appropriate control measures to mosquito populations in assigned areas as required including driving, application, and safety flagging.
  • Monitors environmental and mechanical conditions during insecticidal applications to ensure accurate delivery of material.
  • Uses pesticides in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines.
  • Records all insecticide usage.
Inspector/Larviciding Duties
  • Identifies locations that produce mosquito larvae.
  • Performs appropriate control measures to immature mosquito populations in assigned areas as required.
  • Monitors environmental and mechanical conditions during insecticidal applications to insure accurate delivery of material.
  • Uses pesticides in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines.
  • Records all pesticide usage.
 Recovery Period (Off-Season) Mosquito Control
  • Assists in winter maintenance of application equipment and vehicles.
  • Assists in building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and cleaning duties.
  • Assists in mapping and surveys of areas for thermal fogging, ULV, larviciding, and other surveys required by the division.
  • Assists in non-technical service duties.
  • Assists in routine office duties.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Mosquito and Vector Control Director.
Veterinary Public Health (VPH)
  • Assists in daily shelter cleaning, animal feeding/water duties.
  • Assists in daily sanitation and maintenance of animal holding pens and cages.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the VPH Director or other VPH supervisory staff.
Public Health Service Areas
  • Assists in non-technical service duties.
  • Assists in routine office duties.
  • Assists in routine office duties that require no clerical/administrative experience.
  • Assists in orderly and maintenance duties.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Public Health Service area Administrator or other Public Health Service area Manager or Supervisor.
  • Participate in the incorporation of Health Equity Principles into division and departmental strategies.
 Other
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event. 

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; and
  • One (1) full season of ULV truck driving experience with an organized mosquito control agency.
  • Five (5) years of paid stable work experience.
PLUS
  • Must be able to safely drive and operate equipment under a variety of conditions.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours.
  • Must be able to withstand stress generated by private citizens.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in various urban and natural environments and weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift at least 75lbs.
Other Requirements:
  • Must obtain a Pesticide Noncommercial Applicator License from the Texas Department Agriculture within one year of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License (TX upon hire). Must have a good driving record
