Overall Job Objective

Position Description

Under supervision, works in the Crime Laboratory Services – Firearms Identification, evaluating firearms for entry in the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS).
 

  • Reports to the Firearms Laboratory Manager.
  • Inventories, documents and evaluates various types of firearms for possible entry into the IBIS / NIBIN database.
  • Test fires appropriate calibers and types of firearms.
  • Conducts restoration of obliterated serial numbers on firearms.
  • Issues reports accurately reflecting the results of examinations.
  • Conducts administrative reviews of examiner's reports.
  • Testifies in court relating to the results of examination.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from a four year accredited institution with a major in a natural science (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics) or forensic sciences.
  • The Technician must meet licensure requirements as established by the Texas Forensic Science Commission.
  • Maintain a valid Texas driver's license and the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time while seated at the IBIS Brasstrax unit.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time at a personal computer.
  • Ability to evaluate test-fired specimens in order to follow IBIS entry protocols.
 
Physical Requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • Standing, walking, running, talking, and hearing.
  • Lifting moderately heavy items up to 50 lbs.

Routine External Contacts:

Preferences

  • Experience in a firearms laboratory with experience in the test firing and evaluation of all types of firearms along with experience utilizing the NIBIN / IBIS technology.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards and requirements of the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) ISO/IEC 17025 program.
  • Computer literacy in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

LOCATION:

  • Institute of Forensic Sciences, Houston, TX
HOURS:
  • 40 hours per week
  • May include weekends and night or evening shift work
SALARY:
  • $19.38/Hr
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods
