Overall Job Objective

Position Description

The HazMat Captain is a supervisor staff position responsible for providing strategic leadership, guidance, and supervision for all assigned activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic leadership and guidance for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provides input for decisions and comprehensive long-range plans so that projected needs of the community are met, and department resource utilization is maximized.
  • Ensures quality, accuracy, and timely completion of assigned tasks including program management in accordance with HCFMO policies and procedures.
  • Supervises assigned employees, to include hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining employees, and prioritizes workload to ensure effective delivery of services.
  • Performs administrative functions in accordance with policies and procedures, to include completing, reviewing and maintaining records and reports; and developing summary data reports, as required.
  • Performs as a member of an Incident Management Team during emergency or disaster situations.
  • Maintains situational awareness of all HCFMO activities.
  • Serves on committees, boards, or other teams as assigned or approved by the Fire Marshal.
  • Performs assigned tasks safely, documents and reports initial accidents, injuries, or health exposure in accordance with accepted safety practices and HCFMO policy.
  • Performs other duties as directed by a supervisor or the Fire Marshal.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, or GED, and
  • Ten (10) years combination of law enforcement/fire/military experience, to include 6 years in a mid-level management position
 
OR
  • Associate degree with an emphasis in Business/Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Fire Science or a related field and
  • 8 years combination of law enforcement/fire/military experience, to include 6 years in a mid-level management position
 
OR
 
  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Business/Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Fire Science or a related field and
  • 6 years combination of law enforcement/fire/military experience, to include 6 years in a mid-level management position

OR
  • Master's degree with an emphasis in Business/Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Fire Science or a related field and
  • 4 years combination of law enforcement/fire/military experience, to include 6 years in a mid-level management position.

PLUS
 
  • Valid driver's license, State of Texas Class B Exempt or CDL.
  • Certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection as a Basic Structure Firefighter and Hazardous Materials Technician.

 Additional Requirements
 
  • Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining Incident Command System (ICS) certification at the IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 ICS-300, ICS-800, levels within a year of employment.

Preferences

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Business/Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Fire Science or a related field and 6 years combination of law enforcement/fire/military experience, to include 2 years in a senior management position.
  • Certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Peace Officer.
  • Certified by the Texas Fire Commission as a Fire Instuctor, Incident Safety Officer, or Hazardous Incident Commander.

General Information

HOURS:  

  • 40 Hours per Week Monday-Friday.
  • Various Shifts Including Nights, Weekends & Holidays.

SALARY: 
  • Commensurate with Experience. 
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods.

LOCATION:
  • 2326 Atascocita Rd. Humble, TX 77396.
