Overall Job Objective

Position Description

The Community Supervision Officer / Assessor evaluates clients to determine criminogenic risk and needs. Interviewing clients and determining the appropriate parts of the assessment that need to be administered is an essential part of this role. In addition, the incumbent will use the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS) to develop recommendations for clients and write complex documents that are used to designate clients to the proper programs and services.
 
Detailed Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Communicates on a daily basis with judges, attorneys, prosecutors, court and law enforcement authorities and, peers, along with clients and their families about a wide range of complex issues
  • Gathers collateral information necessary to conduct assessments
  • Conducts a complicated assessment requiring the use of judgment to determine the necessity to administer or not administer additional parts of the instrument
  • Uses the information from the assessment to write multi-page reports used by the Department and Courts to make determinations about treatment and assignment of clients
  • Maintains appropriate entries in the electronic case management systems
  • Visits the Jails to conduct Assessments
  • Participates in work groups as necessary
  • Provides group instruction to clients
  • Helps to create and contributes to a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a cooperative and amicable manner with supervisors, coworkers, and members of the public
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements

The applicant must:

  • Possess (or obtain within one year of appointment) the State mandated qualifications for a Community Supervision Officer
    • Failure to pass the test may result in a termination of employment
  • Be certified (or become certified within 90 days of appointment) in the use of the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS)

A Community Supervision Officer in Texas cannot be employed as a peace officer or work as a reserve or volunteer peace officer; and cannot be currently on community supervision, parole, or serving a sentence for a criminal offense

Additional Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree conferred by an institution of higher education accredited by an accrediting organization recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
  • A copy of academic transcript attached to application
    • Two (2) certified original copies will be required at time of hire
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Valid Driver's License (Texas by hire date)
    • Good driving record and insurable under the department's automobile insurance program

General Information

HOURS: 

  • 40 Hours per Week
  • Subject to overtime work as required

SALARY: 
  • Commensurate with Experience
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods

Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
