Assists in providing appropriate veterinary medical services to the shelter population of animals. Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department.
Assists Veterinarian with surgeries, including sterilization of surgical instruments and area. Prepares animals for surgery and monitors during surgery and in recovery. Assists in evaluating the health of the shelter animals and brings issues to the attention of the veterinarian. Assists with performing medical evaluation of the animals in the shelter including a variety of animal health diagnostic tests and procedures. Administers prescribed medications and treatments as directed, and performs vaccinations. May perform euthanasia when necessary and/or assist veterinarian with euthanasia. Updates medical records of animals in the shelter, including diagnoses and treatment, vaccines given and surgery performed. Promotes responsible pet ownership by answering questions from potential adopters and the public regarding animal health and behavior. Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.
High School Diploma/GED; Four years experience working in animal medical environment. Good computer, verbal and written communication, supervisory, management, and organizational skills. Good interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, employees, and elected officials. Current or eligible for licensure as a Veterinary Technician with the State Board of Veterinary Medicine Examiners.
SALARY RANGE: Public Health Grade 7, $1,288.00 - $1,517.60 biweekly based on qualifications
