SUMMARY:  Reviews plans for proposed commercial projects, remodels, and additions. Conducts physical building, plumbing, and electrical inspections and addresses violations and issues citations as appropriate.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  • Conducts commercial plan reviews including commercial remodel and addition projects; issues letters of approval or denial as required.

  • Performs mechanical, electrical, and plumbing inspections per City adopted code and ordinances on residential and commercial projects; verifies that all construction meets code and local requirements.

  • Answers phones; responds to inquiries regarding all construction jobs, code, ordinance, and related laws.

  • Investigates problems and issues as assigned.

  • Issues "stop work" orders and Municipal Court citations as appropriate.

  • Participates in City-wide emergency response as necessary.

  • Attends various meetings.

  • Performs other duties as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

High school diploma or equivalent; AND five (5) years of construction experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 

 

Knowledge of:

  • Department policies and procedures.

  • International Building and Mechanical codes.

  • National Electrical codes.

  • General building practices and their application to individual structures.

  • State and Federal laws pertaining to commercial construction.

 

Skill in:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Diagnosing and resolving permit and construction issues.

  • Operating a personal computer, standard software, and some specialized software.

  • Communicating clearly, both orally and in writing.

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and plans.

 

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid State driver's license.

  • International Building Code or International Residential code certification.

  • State Plumber Inspectors License, ICC Mechanical and Electrical Certifications, preferred.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a standard office environment and at various inspection sites. May be exposed to some unsafe structures, unsafe electrical installations, and high voltage. Requires safety procedures to be followed, including the use of personal protective equipment.
