The purpose of the Painter position is to perform general painting, restoration and refinishing techniques to reduce replacement costs and enhance the life of airfield markings, equipment, and facilities throughout William P. Hobby Airport.  The painter will be responsible for identifying, preparing, maintaining and utilizing all required materials, supplies and equipment to complete all assignments.  Uses a variety of specialized commercial painting equipment, such as self-contained, self-propelled spray type machines (paint truck), airless line striping machines, thermoplastic systems, rollers, paint brushes, line lasers, scarifier line removal (abrasion) machines, stencils, measurement tools and other related materials used in painting and measuring airfield markings.  Responsible for maintaining application, spray, paint and other power equipment used to enhance the appearance and serviceability of various structures such as runways, taxiways, aircraft parking ramps, service roads, vehicle parking lots, roadways, airport facilities, and other assorted specialized assets.  Oversees the daily functions to ensure a high level of quality and service.  Reviews and implements work orders and assignments in accordance with federal and local rules and regulations that meet airport standards in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 139 and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular(s) (AC) which pertain to airport markings.  Calculates, based upon surface measurements and/or work order(s), the materials needed to accomplish each project and/or the assigned task.  Responsible for executing assigned work in a highly efficient manner with no discrepancies and maintaining a safe clean work area.  Accomplish other duties as assigned.  Must be able to pass a criminal background check, obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearance(s) where required.
The Painter will include but is not limited to:

  • Reviews and implements work orders and assignments.
  • Identifies, prepares and obtains required materials, supplies and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Performs general painting, restoration and refinishing techniques, e.g., spray and brush painting, varnishing, priming, scraping, floating and taping.
  • Identifies, prepares and obtains required materials, supplies and equipment to complete assignments.
  • Repairs damaged surfaces.
  • Mixes and blends paint to match colors.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area

The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, pushing/pulling, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions, walking and standing for extended periods of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of conditions such as heat, cold, moisture, winds and air/noise outdoor environments.  The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical exposure of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns


Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through nine (9) to eleven (11) years of formal schooling.  No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required.
Two (2) years of experience as a painter are required.
May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an "H" endorsement for transporting hazardous material.


Knowledge of proper usage and maintenance of power spray equipment, proper cleaning and care of supplies (brushes and equipment); paints, enamels, lacquers and fixtures of pavements and facilities using appropriate tools and techniques.  Experience with airport or roadway pavement markings or an EPA certification is preferred. Forklift operation and experience a plus.

Pay Grade - 11
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
