DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Enforces and maintains the understanding and application of building codes and ordinances for structural, electrical, plumbing and mechanical facilities, structures and systems. Identifies, schedules, conducts and reviews various types of inspections of structural, electrical, plumbing and mechanical installations to ensure compliance with regulations. Enters data from forms and reports to track and maintain project performance and status on computer. Handles all inquiries from technical professionals and general public to increase knowledge and insight of code requirements. Reviews occupancy plans and investigations
This is a grant funded position subject to cancelation when funds are depleted and/or contract period ends.
The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as computers or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier III Level.
- MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires an Associate's degree in a field closely related to the area of inspection to be performed; or a high school diploma/GED and certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of over 18 months in the area of inspection to be performed.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four years of journey level experience in building trades construction, with two of these years in inspections.
MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must obtain a State of Texas Plumbing Inspector's license within 90 days of appointment into this classification. International Conference of Building Officials certification as either Plan Examiner, Plumbing Inspector, Mechanical Inspector of Building Inspector.
Council of American Building Officials One & Two Family Dwelling Code Certification or International Conference of Building Officials Combination Inspector disciplines.
Must have valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (A.P. 2-2).
Preference will be given to applicants with valid ICC Commercial or Residential building inspector certification.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6**.

Grants and Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred.
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
Pay Grade 21
