Performs and schedules various skilled activities associated with the maintenance of mechanical equipment in the Drinking Water Operations facilities. Prioritizes maintenance repair of failed equipment to minimize equipment down time. Makes periodic checks of plant equipment to ensure proper operation and maintenance. Prepares requisitions for equipment and replacement parts to maintain adequate stock levels. Preforms corrective and preventative maintenance on the equipment associated with the facility and records the data for input into the City's Work Management System.
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. This position requires very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. Routine discomforts including but not limited to, exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and hazardous chemicals. Driving is an essential function of this position, as the selected candidate will operate personal or city vehicle, must have a Valid Driver's License and be compliant with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).

This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier 1 Level.


Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions like percentages, ratios, etc., as might normally be acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or a GED.
Four (4) years of operational and maintenance experience including but not limited to, industrial equipment such as pumps and motors are required.


Preference will be given to candidates with training and experience in preventive and corrective maintenance programs related to rotating equipment such as pumps. Such experience could include pump repair, alignment, vibration testing, and lubrication.

Preference shall also be given to those individuals possessing a valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) and/or forklift certification.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**


However, the Department may administer a skill assessment evaluation. 

If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.  The salary range for this position is:
Salary Range - Pay Grade 17
