Job Overview:


Reporting to the Vice President EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) Capital Projects, the EPC project director will take ownership of the entire project process from capture and proposal through execution and project closeout. Project Execution will include engineering, procurement and construction. The project director will interface with the client to determine the client requirements, develop the proposal accordingly and execute per the contractual requirements. Plan, co-ordinate and manage the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of major projects by directing and collaborating with the matrix organization, drawing resources as needed from Engineering, Project Controls, Supply Chain and Construction and Completions.


EPC projects will vary in scope, size and complexity, the Project Director will be flexible to manage at all levels of the project management spectrum as required for the success of the project. The success of the project is measured by clean HSE record, client satisfaction, completed contractual requirements, and company profitability.


Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:


Direct the Integration of a Major Project

  • Direct and implement all functions of project management.
  • Direct the project through its development stages.

HSE Management

  • W o r k with project team members to visibly support and comply to the APTIM HSE culture and goals and insure that HSE requirements are followed by all project participants inclusive of any and all subcontracted services.
  • Targets will be zero harm to all personnel associated with the projects.

Customer Relationships

  • Ensure that customer requirements and the needs of multiple stakeholders are being identified and managed effectively.
  • Facilitate organized and effective communication from the contractual or client requirements and execution team.
  • Facilitate clear and concise communication back to the client ensuring full alignment.

Capture and Proposal Management

  • Work with business Development team and provide technical and commercial assistance in the capture of new project opportunities with new and existing clients.
  • Act as proposal manager and overall lead in the development of EPC proposals.
  • Maintain an active role in the development of competitive estimates.
  • Actively seek creative solutions and execution methodologies to obtain a competitive advantage to win projects
  • Identify project and proposal risks and work to mitigate.


Commercial Management

  • Effective management of APTIM/Client contract, including delivery of the as-sold EBIT for the project.
  • Effective leadership in the change management process with clear scope definition and communications.

Scope Management

  • Ensure an effective handover from Business Development group
  • Ensure there is a clear definition of project scope
  • Ensure that the project execution complies with the requirements of the contract
  • Manage and monitor project performance on an ongoing basis to identify issues and opportunities early and take pre-emptive action.
  • Effectively manage project interfaces, in conjunction with the Project team, including the use of Sub-contracted services or High Value Service providers.

Time Management

  • Direct the planning of all scope elements of the project. Interface and collaborate with key management members such as Project controls, Supply chain and Construction managers.
  • Develop resource & financial requirements from the project plan.
  • Direct the management of the design, procurement and construction activities to meet the project schedule
  • Timely and effective documentation turnover and project close-out.

Cost Control

  • Direct the planning and preparation of accurate project estimates in collaboration with the Estimating managers.
  • Ensure that appropriate cost reports are established on the project for WP and Customer use.
  • Monitoring and control of all cost aspects of the project to forecast costs, obtain approvals, identify trends and act to avoid cost overruns a take advantage of opportunities.
  • Immediately communicate any change in project cost, revenue or margin.

Quality Management

  • Define the project quality requirements and develop the project schedule
  • Compliance with APTIM policies and procedures.
  • Implement lessons learned system

Team Management

  • Define roles and responsibilities and provide clear and focused leadership for the project team to create a vision for project success and a strategy to fit that vision.
  • Work with Area/Department management to ensure proper evaluations of skill sets and placement of personnel.
  • Communicate performance concerns with department management.

Communications Management

  • Effective communications with the project team.
  • Accurate, timely & effective progress reporting to the Customer and internally to APTIM management.
  • Facilitate effective meetings both internally and externally.
  • Ongoing monitoring of the communication network between project staff, the customer and third parties and introduction of changes where required.

Risk Management

  • Develop a project risk matrix during the proposal phases of the project.
  • Identify and monitor changes and closure of project risks and opportunities.
  • Continuously assess the project identifying and mitigating project risks
  • Maintain the risk management focus throughout the project duration.

Design Management

  • Assess the design activities and ensure a 'fit for purpose' design of the plant
  • Institute an "engineer to construct" mindset in the team.
  • Facilitate early and continuous involvement from construction and completions in the project process.
  • Maintain a focus on the advanced work packaging concepts early in the design process.
  • Monitor as required design activities, interdisciplinary data flow and communications to ensure compliance with the project execution plan
  • Understand how design impacts project success and communicate this to the team.

Procurement/Subcontracts Management

  • Assess procurement process throughout the project to ensure goods meet specification, are delivered on time and are within budget.
  • Participate in the selection of key suppliers and sub-controls.
  • Assist in the facilitation of Kick Off Metings's for key suppliers and Sub-contractors.

Construction Management

  • Monitor the Construction Management function to ensure safe delivery of the project within cost and schedule objectives.
  • Collaborate closely with the construction team during design to implement the Advanced Work Packaging systems.

Technical and Industry Experience

  • More than 15 years' experience in project management, engineering, and construction on EPC and/or EPCM projects.
  • Demonstrable commitment to HSE Management in a project environment, excellent leadership and communication skills and a high level of customer focus.
  • An Entrepreneurial spirit that is open to advancing technological solutions and improving process es throughout the project life cycle.
  • Proven ability to direct a project, while maintaining collaborative and entrepreneurial team environment.
  • Ability to empower project teams to be efficient, creative and thoughtful.
