This position is in Pediatrics, Neonatology at Texas Children's Hospital. The selected candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day collection of in-patient clinical data for/but not limited to: the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Consortium (CHNC) database data set; Vermont Oxford Network (VON) database data set or any other Neonatology databases (REDCap). This individual will utilize expert computer and clinical skills to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the data entered into the clinical databases and support the Neonatology Section’s efforts to provide data to clinicians for clinical inquiry, quality improvement projects or research. The selected candidate will provide coverage for the NICU care coordinators team as needed.

Assures accurate data extrapolation and timely data entry:

  • Understands the clinical data that are extracted from patient charts and the data's relationship to the NICU Clinical Databases.
  • Completes and oversee data collection and data entry carefully and accurately as per site’s protocol and Manual of Operations definitions. 
  • Maintains existing procedures for data collection, data security and patient privacy submission and correction.
  • Collaborates with Vermont Oxford Network (VON) to ensure data entered meets the requirements of VON and collaborates with Children’s Hospitals Neonatal Database (CHND) to ensure data entered meets the requirements of CHND.
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the Data Team to ensure the accuracy and integrity of data collection, entry and outcomes reporting.

Maintains and supports needs of the Neonatology Section regarding NICU Clinical Databases:

  • Understands the platform for the NICU Clinical Databases and is able to work with Information Systems staff to ensure accuracy of data (i.e., assist in troubleshooting).
  • Functions as a resource for Clinicians to help them use the information from the databases (i.e. Nightingale).
  • Assists Data Project Manager to review reports, surveys or other documents before distribution to assure accuracy, provide clinical insights and identify potential trends.
  • Participates in Listserv to assist other Data Abstractors with issues or questions they have posted.
  • Participates in monthly conference calls and meetings relating to NICU databases.
  • Participates in the Neonatology Data Team meetings.

Participates in clinical improvement projects:

  • Participates in QI Project meetings as assigned by Data Project Manager to support quality improvement work with our hospital partner and provide data from the NICU Clinical Databases.
  • Participates in NICU clinical improvement projects and any projects in which the Neonatology section might be involved with VON, CHND, etc.
  • Represents BCM/TCH Newborn Center as needed at national or local meetings.
  • Performs special projects as requested.

Participates in patient care in RN capacity:

  • Adheres to the scope of practice as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Provides professional nursing assessment of patients.
  • Communicates with other health care professional regarding orders and care of patients.
  • Provides telephone triage to patients and ensure patients receive the right level of care.
  • Serves as primary back-up coverage for neonatology’s clinical care coordinator RN’s.


  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Two years of experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). Degrees in lieu of experience will not be accepted.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
