Transportation / ITS Engineer
Transportation Operations Management / Traffic Monitoring
AECOM is actively seeking an experienced and highly talented ITS/Traffic Engineer for immediate employment in our Austin, Texas Office, with a possible alternate posting in our Houston, Texas office. AECOM’s network of talented professionals supports public and private transportation clients across the State of Texas, and this position in particular will support the emerging technologies focus of our Technology group, which supports activities across the nation. The successful candidate will join a talented team of subject matter experts in the fields of traffic engineering, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Connected and Automated Vehicles (CV/AV or CAV), providing professional services across business lines including planning, design, integration, and operations, and maintenance phases of traffic engineering, as well as traditional ITS, Smart City, and Emerging Technology analyses, solutions, and recommendations.
Responsibilities may include:
Leading a variety of technical tasks under the guidance of an experienced Project Manager for projects including:
Intelligent Transportation Systems design, analysis, and evaluation
Working closely with a technical team of CV/AV and traffic engineering professionals nationwide
Data analytics design and execution, including the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques
Connected vehicle DSRC or C-V2X device and system testing and acceptance
Advanced traffic signal systems
Transportation Operations Centers
Traffic Engineering Studies including modeling and simulation
Write technical reports and make technical presentations to a variety of stakeholders
Systems engineering documentation
Projects may involve:
ITS device and system design and evaluation
Connected and automated vehicle traffic systems modeling and simulation
Smart City innovations and solutions
Active Travel Management Systems, Advanced Arterial Traffic Signal Systems
Systems Engineering Analyses (SEA), such as Concepts, Requirements, Specifications, Design, Testing, and Verification
Microstation, AutoCAD, traffic system modeling and simulation using VISSIM, TransModeler, or TransCAD
GIS systems development using GIS software and Python
Traffic studies, impact analysis, and recommendations
Traffic signal designs
Additional job responsibilities may include:
• Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.
• Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.
• Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.
• Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered.
• Identifies discrepancies in results.
• Provides guidance to entry level engineers.
• Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision.

Must Have Skills/Experience (Including any required Certifications):
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical field (Civil Engineering or related field)
4+ years of experience (Advanced degrees may reduce this requirement)
Technical/task leadership experience
Must have prior traffic and ITS design experience
Traffic system modeling and simulation experience using industry-standard software such as VISSIM, TransModeler, or TransCAD
Effective oral and written communication skills
Microsoft Office Suite
Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or related technical field
Familiarity with Connected Vehicle technologies like DSRC and C-V2X
Familiarity with DSRC standards such as IEEE 1609 and SAE J2735
Familiarity with Automated Vehicle technologies and approaches, including behavior architectures, perception pipelines, path planning, localization, world modeling, and command and control.
Demonstrated ability in applying artificial intelligence / machine learning techniques in novel applications for transportation or emerging technology.
