Houston, TX
TNTP strives to end the injustice of educational inequality by providing excellent teachers to the students who need them most and by advancing policies and practices that ensure effective teaching in every classroom. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP is driven by the knowledge that effective teachers have a greater impact on student achievement than any other school factor. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to find, develop and keep great teachers. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 43,000 teachers and worked with more than 200 districts in 31 states - benefiting an estimated 7 million students. In addition, TNTP's acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the teacher workforce -- most recently including The Widget Effect (2009) and Teacher Evaluation 2.0 (2010) -- have influenced federal education policy and inspired reform efforts across the country. TNTP is active in more than 25 cities, including 10 of the nation's 15 largest.
We are currently seeking two Project Directors to join the team that is leading our innovative partnership with Houston Independent School District (HISD) in Houston, Texas to transform their teacher and human capital management systems. As part of this cutting-edge reform work, the Project Directors will collaborate with and support district leaders, support professionals, and building level school leaders to help manage the successful execution of HISD's new teacher evaluation and development system.
These roles are based in the school district office in Houston and are available immediately.
HISD's Teacher Human Capital Management Transformation
Research has proven time and again that teachers have a greater impact on their students' success than any other school factor. HISD is the seventh largest school district in the country and has garnered national attention for its use of value-added data to guide instructional decision-making and drive a system of differentiated compensation for educators. HISD is committed to ensuring that every student learns from effective teachers. That means bringing the most talented new teachers to HISD, giving all teachers the support they need to be successful, and holding on to teachers who excel in the classroom.
TNTP is supporting HISD's human capital transformation through a five-year initiative to drive the strategic direction of the transformation effort; develop new system-wide tools and processes; coordinate and monitor school-level implementation activities; and build stakeholder buy-in for reform and implement the following strategies:
*Smart recruitment/staffing: attracting the best new teachers from across the state and across the country
*Useful appraisals: establishing a fair and accurate teacher appraisal system to provide teachers and principals with meaningful feedback and information
*Individualized support: providing teachers with the support they need to do their best work
*New career pathways: offering meaningful career pathways and differentiated compensation to retain and leverage the most-effective teachers
This past spring, HISD's Board of Trustees approved a new appraisal and development system for all teachers in the district. The new system holds all teachers accountable to a clearly articulated set of expectations for their instructional practice and professionalism, as well as to their students' academic outcomes. It also provides teachers with individualized support and development opportunities at the school level. HISD will be implementing this new system beginning the 2011-12 school year.
TNTP is helping HISD completely transform the way it recruits, hires, develops and holds onto its teachers with one goal in mind: effective teaching in every classroom, for every student, every day. We're building a new HISD that helps teachers reach their full potential. For more information about education reform at HISD, visit http://www.hisdeffectiveteachers.org/
