From the moment a visitor walks into the door at TMC Orthopedic, it becomes obvious they have entered into a different type of work environment. One can see the fervor with which TMC employees approach their job. Employees scurrying around the office, overhead pages, phones ringing, and the hectic atmosphere lend the visitor to realize that TMC is indeed a different type of company.
There are walls of pictures of employees playing basketball, at a party at the CEO’s house, eating spaghetti, dressed in costumes, etc. In the longest hallway in the office, one notices that the carpet is an odd color of green. Upon closer inspection, it is not carpet, but it is actually Astroturf, complete with four holes for a putting green. When visitors enter the room entitled the “Stress Relief Room,” they see a basketball goal and video games being played. Other employees may be playing shuffleboard or air hockey as the exercise bicycles are seldom used. A visit to the company’s website shows that TMC values its employees. Their pictures are plastered over the website from Christmas parties and days at the company-sponsored baseball games to bowling parties and quarterly fun days. TMC surely follows the adage of “work hard, play hard.”
Unwittingly, TMC has become a haven for employees that thrive in a fast-paced but fun environment. TMC’s hiring process is unsurpassed in its rigorous testing, screening and interview process. The culture of TMC is thus built on this principle – we hire the best, so we can treat our employees the best. Due to this philosophy, difficulties that oftentimes plague many businesses are rarely encountered at TMC; company management is afforded the luxury of giving their employees the benefit of the doubt. For example, problems like punctuality, dress code, time off, overtime, etc., are rarely issues at TMC. TMC has a self-empowered culture, meaning that suggestions are taken from all levels. One example of this philosophy is the CEO’s monthly employee attitude and feedback surveys that are sent to every employee to solicit ideas, comments, suggestions, and complaints. These surveys have helped to foster a reciprocal trusting relationship between employees and management.
