Blog Post: Open my own business…now?

posted Tuesday, January 27, 2009 7:55 PM

In the worse times there are opportunities.  I’m not saying quit your day job. I am saying that you have many talents that you may not be using.  Those unused talents could generate some extra income along with something you enjoy doing and gain recognition in your community. You don’t always need a lot of money to start a business. You do need the desire and drive to do it. This means working hours after your day job, working weekends, etc. One happy customer will tell several friends. And word of mouth is the proven method for referrals and success.

When was the last time you considered starting a business? I’m a geek so my “self” evolves around software, accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, etc. That’s how I’ve made a living for many, many years (yikes, I let my age slip!) and will continue because it’s something I love to do. So……I’m going to invest time in myself and explore teaching, training, doing all the parts I like to do and get paid for it. I’m not greedy, I’m being realistic. And what’s better is I will be helping someone learn a new skill that will benefit them! That’s what I’m talking about! A win-win situation.

Caution! Leaping does require hard work and in most cases continuing education. There are always new products to learn to keep you on the edge. That doesn’t mean you need lots of cash to pull it off. It does mean you need to be self disciplined, devote time and invest in yourself. Read, learn, and improve. You are one of a kind, an original. You were created to be all you want to be. Invest in yourself.

I earned a degree in ACCOUNTING but I have yet to gain experience. Because I would one day like to start my business. Any suggestions on how to get experience. What do you think is the best software.

Austin, Try CPA offices or accounting/bookkeeping services. Consider sending a resume to several of with a cover letter that you have knowledge that you would like to apply. The reason I suggest CPAs or accounting/bookkeeping services is you willl learn every piece of the small business from start up to tax returns. The variety of work is huge. QuickBooks is the #1 software. Sage (MAS90) is a QB look a like now. Peachtree is real close to QB. If you learn QB it will translate to other softwares. The key is setting up the chart of accounts correctly and linking to other accounts. Keep in touch.
