Blog Post: New Year.. New You
posted Monday, January 5, 2009 1:26 PM
We can all agree that 2008 brought about quite a bit of uncertainty in the job market. Even here in Houston, where were are semi-insulated from some of the downturns, we all know of or may have expereinced lay-offs. What better time than the ushering in of 2009 to rethink our approach to our job search or take steps to ensure job security.
IF YOU ARE EMPLOYED: * Treat every day as if you were being interviewed for your next position in the company - be a superstar. * Focus in on one or more specialized aspects of your position - make yourself invaluable to the company. * Build relationships - I can't stress this one enough. Join professional or trade organzations. Become active in your Alumni Association. Make a committment to meet 10 new people in your industry and stick to it. IF YOU ARE UNEMPLOYED: * Treat your job search like a job - one that begins at 8AM on Monday. Document all people you spoke to, interviews you've went one, etc... and do your follow up. * DO NOT let dismal economic news discourage you. Set goals and be determined. * Have a positive attitute - Let your light shine so brightly people can't help but notice you. * Use as many job search tools as you can - people you know, networking websites, search engines, career fairs, job boards, etc. * Go on every interview you are offered, even if it's not a particularly appealing job opportunity - at the very least, it offers great practice to hone in on your interviewing skills. May 2009 bring you joy and success!
