Blog Post: Bookkeeper or Accountant?
posted Tuesday, December 9, 2008 8:05 PM
Bookkeeper - The recording of all daily financial transactions by an individual or an organization; accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll, etc.
Accountant - One that inspects the financial records (bookkeeping records) of individuals or business concerns and prepares financial and tax report. . Full Charge Bookkeeper - Someone who can do it all; including compiling the data into the General Ledger and preparing financial statements. Full Charge Bookkeeper looks a little different, doesn’t it? Why stop there? Be a Certified Bookkeeper! There are many “bookkeeper” programs on the Internet. Be sure you look for all the credentials and certifications. A Certified Bookkeeper sets itself apart from Bookkeepers. I’m a Certified Bookkeeper and member of the only nationally recognized association that tests the students off site and no open book. Not many associations can promise that. “Demand for full-charge bookkeepers is expected to increase as they are called upon to do much of the work of accountants. Those with several years of accounting or bookkeeper certification will have the best job prospects.”
There’s a fine line between bookkeeper and accountant. Close that fine line and become a full charge Certified Bookkeeper. Email me if you have bookkeeping questions.

Is your desire to work in a public accouting firm or private small business? Consider getting a job with a public accounting firm and gain some experience. They will expect you to be able to do basic bookkeeping and accounting, maybe up to tax return preparation. I started in public accounting and later switched to private small business. I truly loved being in public accounting. Every day presented a different challenge for me. I was able to learn accounting for several industries and tax preparation. Consider mailing your resume to public accounting firms in December and January. That is a very busy time for accounting firms and they are always looking for staff. I wish you well. Keep in touch. I'm offering some workshops in November thru January that might be beneficial to you. Check my blog and website. Good luck ~
