Blog Post: Will I fit in?
posted Tuesday, December 9, 2008 8:00 PM
I’m sure everyone starting a new job experiences the feeling of “will I fit in?” That’s normal for the average office. What if the office employees are mainly young people in their twenties and you’re considered “older”. Or the other way around where the office employees are over forty and you’re twenty five. Either side, that’s a hard gap to bridge. It starts with beliefs, way of thinking and all the way down to dress wear.
Younger folks need to appreciate what the older folks can teach them. Remember that they were working long before you were born. Working people in their 50s and 60s are the ones that pretty much founded the workplace. They may be viewed as set in their ways. That’s ok, because they paved the path you are walking on. Older folks need to appreciate what the younger folks can bring to the table. The younger was raised with instant results. They have their own way of doing things, too. With the technology they were raised with, they can multi task many levels. The future workplace will be much diversified. Young, old, pencils, laptops, paper and paperless. It’s the way our world is headed. They older can’t mold the younger to their ways of thinking. The young can’t unmold the older. We all need to work together. We all have much to offer each other. If you’re probably thinking that it’s no big deal then you have not encountered it, yet.
