Blog Post: What is Your Body Language Saying About You?

posted Wednesday, November 19, 2008 9:18 AM

Yesterday I spoke to a group of job seekers in Southwest Houston about what to do to land that perfect job. More specifically, we discussed the interview process from the moment the call comes in through follow-up. The presentation lasted about 45 minutes and I can tell you, some in the audience made a huge impression on me... for better OR for worse.

Your body language, including your facial expressions, are very powerful. Thinking back to yesterday, the folks I remember most were those that were very engaging, smiling, and asking great questions and those that sat, arms crossed, staring blankly (almost frowning). There was even a point when I was so taken aback by a young lady's expression, I tripped up on my words and had to regain my composure; she looked as if she had been forced to listen to me. Was I that boring? I did receive great feedback from most, so, what happened? I'm assuming (correctly I hope) that she just wasn't aware of how she was coming off.

You never know when your next opportunity may come up or who may be the person to give you that lead. When in an environment where great contacts can be made (networking), make sure that your body language, as well as what you say verbally, is in line with your professional ambitions. Smile, nod once in a while, gesture when talking, actively listen, be genuine. It may make the difference between taking that first step toward a great new job and simply wasting your time.

Think about this the next time you meet someone that may be able to help you in your job search or when you're in that next interview: Your body language speaks volumes about you.

I have issues with freezing up in a interview. I know I am very well experienced in the work I do. I recently had a interview for an Accounting Assistant position. My experience is in Accounts Payable which is a portion of the Accounting Assistant position. I thought I was prepared for the questions but when the interviewer asked me questions I did not prepare to answer, I sort of froze up. I also became intimidated by competition. What do you suggest I do to get past freezing up and being intimidated?
