Blog Post: Different strokes for different folks

posted Monday, November 10, 2008 7:45 PM

Not everyone is technology savvy. Some folks still depend on pencils, paper and face to face meetings. Some folks want to save a tree and do all by email or phone. What do you do in the employment field when the new employee doesn’t mold to the old standard? Or is it the old standard hasn’t caught up with the new generation? Anyway you cut the pie; it’s all equal shares but delivered differently. How can that be? We are in changing times. We have two major types of employees in the working field. Older folks are practicing their proven skills, proven techniques, face to face, and hand shakes. The new folks are concerned about the environment; hence they move toward daily emails, text meetings, organization membership and” if you need me call me”. All is ok, all is needed. Today we are experiencing a huge amount of the population retiring, seniors coming out of retirement and the younger entering the work force. An older business owner might relate to an older advertising agent. A younger business owner might relate to a younger advertising agent. Bottom line, it’s all good. We are all needed. We are needed to bridge the gap. The next few years will be troublesome. Employers and employees need to bridge the gap and embrace the change.  At some point you must see “press the flesh”, hand shake, embrace the new technology and have the humility and wisdom to embrace what is relavent from both sides and move forward. We are in changing times, awesome times, but one thing is for sure. If you embrace the change, you will survive the change. Old has something to learn from the new; hence new has much to learn from the old. Be my partner, be my comrade and let’s shine!
