Blog Post: When Was Your Last Self Esteem Checkup?

posted Thursday, August 21, 2008 9:41 PM

Definition: Self-esteem reflects a person’s overall self-appraisal of her or his own worth.

That’s some bold words and to some, maybe uncomfortable. So let’s talk about it.

How you think of yourself is how you project yourself. How you project yourself is what people see. So what does that have to do with being a job seeker? Plenty! You can read and do what all the books tell you to do about how to write your resume, how to act during an interview, when to write the follow up letter, all the way down to what kind of shoes to wear. That’s all fine and dandy, but that won’t get you hired. You can have zillion of degrees, wearing the most expensive suit but if you don’t have a positive self esteem, all the bells and whistles wont’ help.

So let’s get down to the basics. For example, on your resume you have listed various software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint that you have experience with. Ok, fine, here’s your question. Can you walk in, sit down and actually use all the software from the get-go without any supervision? Or do you need someone to show you how to use it? Yes, you need to sell yourself on your resume, but don’t oversell yourself to the point you feel uncomfortable. And that’s where self esteem comes in. If you know your stuff, you will shine. You will enjoy the thrill of being thrown into a mess and come out shining because you know what you stated on your resume was the truth!

Here’s the hard question. Are you happy with yourself? Majority of folks will respond with “yes” just as I would. I’m not perfect. I’m old, I’m overweight, I’m tired, but I know I can run against anyone in the race when it comes to my profession, my career. Everything on my resume I can do without any supervision. Actually the boss needs to get out of my way because I probably know more than he/she does! I invest in myself. I keep my skills up to date. I stay on the edge.  I’m not boasting. I am humbly saying that it’s all up to you. If you’re not happy with yourself, only you can make yourself happy. If you don’t like the work you are doing, only you can dig in and take yourself to new heights. There are many free to little cost programs that can take you from an average person to an outstanding person. It’s all up to you.  The sky is the limit. How high do you want to go? It’s endless. Do yourself a favor and do a self esteem checkup. It’s good to get in touch with yourself. When you do, you will shine!

Wow - great post - I'm just now brushing up on my resume, and honestly was bored with it. I have a whole new way of looking at it now. And I feel motivated in my search. Thank you :)

Michelle,
If you're motivated, I've done my job! Thank you! And good luck.
