Blog Post: Job Hopper or Genius?

posted Sunday, June 29, 2008 3:22 PM

Traditionally the employer looks at a resume, sees where the employee has had three or four employers in the last six years, or only stayed with an employer for a couple of years, and tosses that resume to the side. The job seeker is now labeled as a job hopper. Is that really true today? Could an employer be overlooking a fantastic future employee thinking that way? Businesses have changed so much over the past ten years, let alone our personal lives. Schools have changed and producing a different type of student. Could it be that the job seeker has learned every aspect of their current job and bored because their employer is not feeding the employee’s need for ongoing growth? And let’s really heat it up and toss in gasoline. Gas prices are forcing employees to make some drastic decisions. The supply and demand theory is about to get kicked out of the working arena. Folks, it’s changing times. You can’t judge a book by its cover, so how can you label a job seeker by their resume?  Maybe you’re company is in a slump and you need a dynamic person to turn it around. Maybe that’s the job hopper you’re company needs. Talented, driven, dynamic people don’t stay at the same job forever. Their quest is ongoing; seek, conquer and move on. What if the job hopper doesn’t have experience in your industry? Don’t forget about transferrable “SKAs”; skills, knowledge and ability. That job hopper won’t take but a few weeks to learn your industry and will be teaching the old dog some new tricks. It’s not a one size fits all world. Times are changing and we need to think new.

Actually Pam...you're the genius for recognizing this trend and having this forethought.
I worked for a very intense Pres/CEO for 13.5 yrs. I had to know everything about his companies...I was his right hand person. He started a total of 3 nationally recognized companies during this time...different names and locations, but the same industry. I ran the company for 2 yrs after he died, until the family decided to dissolve it.
Working with him gave me a great on the job education, but no degree. Which means I'm overlooked for management jobs.
Consequently, bored doesn't begin to describe the feelings I have had with the jobs I have had since then.

Julie,
Thank you for your comments. I understand, that's why I wrote the blog. It's a two sided sword; degree no experience and experience no degree. The working population is changing. By 2010 we will have four generations in the workforce. We should value all in the workforce for what they bring to the table; skills, knowledge and abilities aka experience. Paper can't produce results, while experience has more than a 50% chance. I think a big thing that employer's overlook is "connections". If you've been in the workforce for many years, you know lots of people and can be a shaker and mover. Please email me your resume via "contact me". Not promising anything, but you have sparked my interest. Again, thanks Julie, for standing up and voicing your experience.

I suppose I might be labeled a job hopper; I tend to get bored after about a year if I'm not continuing to learn. In my current situation I like my job but there's no room for growth and that's important to me. I'm at a satellite office (about 4 poeple in the office)and I'm limited to my current job as the corporate office is out of state. So I'm feeling like I'm ready to "hop" again. I don't feel like I'm getting the exposure to the other depts that I would get somewhere else. I'm struggling with how long should I wait to see if new positions open up and can't help but wonder if I'm being impatient.
