DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervises the daily field work activities; performs advanced technical investigative work relative to the detection, analysis and elimination or control of environmental pollutants and contaminants. Coordinates detailed sampling and monitoring work; assist sampling teams with sample collection, inspections and investigations. Supervises section; schedules and reviews work; trains and evaluates employees. Plans and supervises the daily regional field work activities. Advises and consults with the public, professional groups, industrial representatives and others regarding environmental criteria, regulations and city abatement programs. Maintains administrative records and prepares various reports. Compiles legal summaries and testifies in court as an expert witness. Promotes environmental awareness concerning the effects and hazards associated with illegal dumping and educate the public regarding pollution prevention and the proper transport and disposal of hazardous and solid wastes.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a Department of Public works and Engineering Emergency Management Position at the Tier 2 Level.

This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

Skills / Requirements
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health Engineering or a closely related degree.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of pollution/environmental control experience are required.

MINIMUM LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to applicants with supervisory experience; knowledge of the NPDES storm water program; experience in sampling streams and other water ways; and the ability to work flexible hours and be on 24 hour call.
